Hello, Pitch Wars hopefuls! Come, grab a warm cup of tea, and gather around. We’re so glad you found your way to our wishlist for the Middle Grade age category.
To start off, what even is Pitch Wars? Well, it is a mentoring program where published/agented authors, editors, or industry interns choose one writer each to spend three months revising their manuscript. It ends in February with an Agent Showcase, where agents can read a pitch/first page and can request to read more!
Now, who are we? Long Quan and I are two diverse authors who acquired agents for our middle grade fantasy manuscripts. We laugh at fart jokes. We love well-written fight scenes. And, most of all, we love heroes that challenge the norm and break barriers. Now, without further ado, here’s some info around what we want and don’t want. An importing side note, your story doesn’t need ALL these things, it’s just a comprehensive list 🙂
Some of the stuff we like:
- Diverse stories!!!
- Science fiction (a la Sal & Gabi Break the Universe)
- Fantasy (a la Aru Shah, Percy Jackson, or The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez)
- Adventure (like an MG version of National Treasure)
- Quirky and comedic voices
- Family-oriented MC’s
- Legos and other fun toys!
Some of the stuff we DON’T like:
- Sad endings 🙁
- Horror (unless its a silly horror comedy)
- Issues-based stories aren’t for us
- Stories with no farts (just kidding!)
Having established all that, you might be wanting to know…are these two goofballs right for me?
Our mentoring style is a mix of big picture and detail-oriented. I like to get into the nitty gritty and make sure your sentences flow well and your chapters are clean. Long Quan is a consistency king, and will ensure elements of your story hold up as the plot unravels. We will both provide a mix of big and small picture edits, but our goal is to keep the novel engaging and fun through and through. If you are not open to changing major elements of your story or do not particularly like having extensive line edits, then we may not be the mentors for you. Otherwise, we are happy to take a look at your entries!!!
